Dental anxiety is incredibly common in America and throughout the world. Some studies have estimated that 9%-15% of Americans avoid going to the dentist solely because of fear and dental anxiety. One survey completed by the British Dental Health Foundation found that a whopping 36% of people who did not visit the dentist regularly did not because of fear.

What Is Dental Anxiety?

While the words fear and anxiety are often used interchangeably, there are differences between the two. People who experience dental phobia experience serious uneasiness when thinking about the dentist or even scheduling an appointment. Their fears are unfounded and exaggerated. Dental phobia is even more serious than dental anxiety, as sufferers experience fear and dread. This can leave them terrified of sitting down in the chair for a routine cleaning or a filling.

Those who have dental phobia are at an increased risk of early tooth loss and gum disease as a result. Those two side effects are compounded by the emotional effects of not visiting the dentist often enough. Discolored, missing and damaged teeth make people feel insecure and self-conscious. If you are experiencing dental phobia or dental anxiety, OneSource Dental can welcome you.
